For the 21st Century

---- For cooperation between medicine and engineering----

Entering the 21st century, Japanese society is now rapidly aging with serious social problems, including the care of elderly and disabled people, as well as assisting their independence. Most of these people have problems with their locomotor systems (muscles, bones, ligaments, nerves) such as paralysis of the limbs or deteriorated muscle power, which can't be helped by the conventional medical system. Therefore, so both medical knowledge and engineering knowledge, such as physics, mechanical engineering, and electronic engineering, are essential for solving these problems.

The Rehabilitation Engineering Center is one of the few research centers in Japan, where the combination of medicine and engineering is being practiced with studies conducted through the collaboration of rehabilitation clinicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, prosthetists, and engineers in the same group.
